To upload a custom image, connect a USB device with the JPG or PNG image you want to use. You can also grab an image from OneDrive if you have it installed on your console.
Note Custom images are only available for adult Microsoft accounts.
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system, select your profile, then select My profile.
- Select Customize profile > Change gamerpic.
- Select Upload a custom image and choose one to use from your connected device or OneDrive.
- Select Upload.
It might take a little while for your custom image to appear while we verify it's OK to use. (If it's not, it'll be reverted to the last gamerpic or avatar you were using.)

Is there a way to do it without a a USB device? I don't have any lying around to use.

The option of using OneDrive should be there I assume. I've never uploaded a custom pic before but I just did there, here is the workaround steps to upload a custom pic.
1. Open edge browser on the Xbox
2. Search for OneDrive and login
3. Find the picture you want to make your custom pic, open it in OneDrive and download it.
4. Go to "Save as" and confirm the location you want to download it. The "downloads" folder should be default and will work fine.
5. Go to your profile, open the window to change your custom gamerpic and use file explorer to navigate to the location of your picture.
6. Upload.

It would be cool if you could confirm if that help page is still accurate. Because it doesn't work for me. Also it skips over details.

I had that same assumption. I believe it is meant to be there but it isn't working.

Read my other reply in the fourm. It seems that help page is outdated and not detailed enough.

Yes, thank you it worked for me and I was also able to help a friend using your technique. If this were reddit I'd give you a medal :)
